SQUIRT II: Gene Falciano

"Geno" as he is called by friends, has been around the game for over 40 years.  At age 50 he's still playing men's league, keeping up with the 20 year olds fresh out of college.  Gene played his youth hockey here on Long Island, attended the hockey powerhouse St. Mary's High School, where he was a defenseman and went on to play four seasons with the LI Digs Junior team in the early 80's.

Not only has Gene seen the game through the player’s eyes, he has also seen it from a parent’s perspective. With two children having gone through the youth hockey gamut Gene understands the family commitment required to have a child in the sport.

As a coach Gene has had success with the Long Beach Middlge School Hockey Program, leading them to multiple winning seasons.  His success as a coahc can be attritubed to his laid-back, positive demeanor which allows him to not only coach his players, but "teach" them as well.  Gene has brought that "teaching" style to Long Beach Lightning and has been a member of the Squirt coaching staff for the past six seasons.

Gene has been a member of the Long Beach Apple Core family since its inception in 2009 not only as a coach but also as the organization’s Alternate Governor and accountant. He volunteers his time strictly because he loves of the game and wants to do what is right for the children of this community. Not once has Gene asked for anything in return. Gene is a CPA by profession and operates his own accounting firm in the West End of Long Beach.

SQUIRT II: Mike Florio

Mike Florio is another hockey lifer on our staff.  Mike played for Long Beach High School and Midget AAA hockey during his teen years, then went on to play two seasons for Nassau Community College. After NCC, Florio played for the Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn Roller Hockey team, which at the time, was tops in the metro area.  While in Fort Hamilton Florio was a 10 time All-Star selection.

While Mike still competes in local men's leagues, his main focus is now on coaching.   He has coached with the City of Long Beach House League, run clinics with the with former NY Islanders Assistant Coach Mike LaZazzera and also provides private instruction in his free time.  Florio truly loves the game of hockey and his desire to pass along his knowledge and that love, is his motivation to coach.  Mike has coached both the Squirt and Pee Wee teams and is returning this season with the Squirts for his sixth year with Long Beach Apple Core family.

He went to the State Tournament six times, winning twice (Squirt and Bantam).  He also played in prestigious Quebec Pee Wee tournament two times, being one of the first NYC kids to do so in the tournament's rich history.   At age 16 he was brought up to play for Brooklyn Stars of the MJHL under Lou Vairo ('84 USA Olympic head coach) who was a major influence in his hockey philosophy.   Joe was selected to the Northeast Regional squad which competed in the U18 National Sports Festival in Lake Placid and got the chance to play against some of the top players in country.

After Junior hockey Joe went on to Iona college where he played for Frank Effinger (Current Head Pro Scout/Phoenix Coyotes).  Iona made the playoffs every year during Joe's tenure and he served as team captain during his Junior and Senior years.   He won several individual awards while at Iona, including Team rookie of year, All ECAC Rookie Team, Team Leading scorer (2X),  ECAC leading scorer(1X), Team MVP and an All-ECAC selection. After Iona, Joe was invited to NJ Devils Rookie/Prospect camp and later attended training camp with the Carolina T birds of ECHL.  Prior to taking over as coach , Joe played 15 seasons for the FDNY "A" team.  He received numerous team and individual accolades, including being named  MVP  four times in Annual NYPD - FDNY contest.    Joe is a big promoter of skill development and team play at every level and is excited to bring his talents and knowledge to "Beach" Hockey.

PEEWEE II: Jerry Hunt

Jerry grew up in the Berkshires of Massachusetts playing Hockey “old school”, on the Pond! He played 3 years at St Josephs Prep in Pittsfield, MA and was a scouted Walk-On at the University of Lowell in 1981, when a knee injury ended his Hockey Playing Career.

Jerry is a USA Certified Hockey Coach, with experience Coaching Hockey at the 8U level with the Greater Lowell Hawks, Berkshire Bruins and under coach Mike Florio with the City of Long Beach House League. Jerry also has a Collegiate Coaching experience as a former Head Coach of the UMASS North Adams Rugby team.

Like many of the other coaches, he has a 3 dimension appreciation of the game as, Player, Coach, and Hockey Parent. He measures player success at the 8U level by how much fun the players have in parallel with their achievement of specific development milestones and progression to the next level. Jerry’s Coaching Philosophy is “Fun and Fundamentals”, employing positive reinforcement and constantly challenging the players to go beyond their current capabilities. BANTAM II: Brian Hurley

Brian brings a wealth of experience to LBAC.  He returns to Long Beach and the Apple Core Organization after spending time with the Nassau County Lions as a member of the Pee-Wee and Bantam coaching staffs. He originally got his start on the Long Beach coaching scene in 2001 when he assisted with the house league program that was then under the direction of Joe Brand. For many years after that, Brian coached with Apple Core youth organization under its prior management at both the Squirt and Pee-Wee levels.  Teams under Brian’s guidance have experienced numerous successful seasons which have included Northeast tournament championships as well as high placements in the LIAHL Championships and Silver Sticks regional play.   Brian has also coached in the Long Island High School Hockey League from 2005-2009 as a member of the Oceanside Middle School staff.

Brian’s hockey philosophy is simple and mirrors that of the Apple Core organization.   “Hockey is a team game.  We need every player to reach their full potential as an individual and as a team member for our players to truly understand the game. It is important to focus on teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect for the game of hockey.  Emphasis shall be placed on discipline, skill development, team orientation and good decision making.   Having a strong work ethic both on and off the ice will lead to success and ultimately allow players to reach the next level of play.”

Brian is a recently retired detective after 24 years of service with the NYPD.   His love of the game not only comes from playing himself as a kid, but from the many years of his own kids involvement and their development as hockey players.

BANTAM II: Matt Angst

Matt Angst is entering his seventh season as a coach with Long Beach Lightning.  Since then, Matt has been able to pass along his knowledge to all those who've gone through the Mite & Squirt level.  In 2016, Coach Matt led the Lighting to a championship in the EJEPL's 10U MADD division.  Matt's coaching philosophy is one of teamwork, discipline, skill development, sportsmanship and fun.  Coach Matt has been called a "player's coach."  He can relate to each player and treats them with respect.

In addition to being a seventh year coach with the Lightning, Matt is currently the manager at the City of Long Beach Ice Arena, responsible for all public programming.  He has made youth hockey a priority and increased enrollment is a credit to his hard work.    He is active in the local community and also serves as the Director of the Long Beach Recreation Summer Camps.  He is a true leader and has experience working with children of all ages.

BANTAM III: Tom Niland

I began my hockey career in Long Beach at the age of 9 after getting involved through the Recreation Department and joined the first, ever, Long Beach ice hockey team. I went on to play youth hockey for other organizations such as the New York Stars and the Oyster Bay Gulls. As a bantam, I played for the Long Island Green Machines who won the Regional Silver Sticks competition and played in the finals of the Nationals Competition in Port Huron, Michigan. I went on to play two years at Tilton Prep School in New Hampshire and was appointed captain my senior year. While in high school, I played four years of varsity baseball and two years of varsity football; both of which I was captain my senior year. I attended Elmira College in upstate New York where I played hockey for two years. After sophomore year, I gave up playing hockey and took an active interest in student government, concentrated on academics, became senior class president, graduated with honors and was asked to be an honorary speaker at my class graduation in 1986.

Sports have always been part of my life. I believe in staying active as it not only keeps me in shape, but also keeps my mind sharp. I credit my years of sports and hockey to the success in my adult life and in business. The leadership qualities I have learned as an athlete gave me the confidence to excel in school, and while I knew nothing about politics, through my leadership abilities, I became senior class president. Those same skills I learned in youth sports have given me my foundation to be a successful business leader.

I have enjoyed a successful 25+ year business career in the surety bond industry having served as president of the Surety Association. Today I am a partner in the firm, Cook Maran where I am Vice President and Director of Surety Bond Operations. I chose to become involved in coaching hockey because I felt I could make an impact and difference in the lives of young men and women.

Coaching also allows me the opportunity to give back to the sport and community that taught, and gave so much to me. As a coach, I know I am entrusted with the well being of so many and I wish to share my experience and passion of sports and hockey with them. As a coach I have been involved as a head coach for Long Beach Apple Core on and off since 2004 as well as with the LB Lightning since the inception of the organization. I have also assisted coaches on the bench at the Long Island Gulls organization including as an active parent providing assistance to the players and coaching staff.

Presently, I live in Lido Beach with my wife and three children, all of whom are active young athletes, (wife included), who also play ice hockey. I currently hold a level 4 USA hockey certification.

MIDGET 18U: Joe Brand

The name Joe Brand has been synonymous with the Long Island hockey coaching scene for over 20 years. His coaching positions are numerous and his knowledge, accolades, and championships for that matter, are unmatched. Known as a “players coach” by those who have played for him, Joe has consistently groomed players for the Junior and College ranks. His greatest success would have to be at the High School level. During his time behind the bench of the Long Beach High School Marines, he has amassed 13 County Championships, 3 New York State Titles, a National Tournament appearance along with 2 Junior Varsity County Championships and 3 Middle School County Championships. To honor his dedication to the game and the great success he has had, he was presented with an award from the former City of Long Beach Recreation Commissioner, Robert Carroll, in 2000 naming him Long Beach's "Mr. Hockey".

Joe has coached youth hockey on Long Island at nearly every level, spending time with the Nassau County Lions, Lady Islanders and most recently with Long Beach Apple Core as coach of the Pee-Wee and Bantam teams. He was the acting hockey director from 2000-2008 at the Long Beach Arena where he was responsible for returning the program to the success it once was in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

As a player, Joe was a member of the first ever Long Beach ice hockey team, was a four-year letterman at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset and went on to play at SUNY-Cortland in the early 80’s.

After graduating college, Joe returned to his home town and ran a prominent local business until 2001 when he joined the City of Long Beach Staff. Joe was the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation from 2004 - 2012 and was integral in the department’s success and the City’s operation of the ice arena.  Joe has returned to the private sector and now owns and operates "Brand's Deli" in Long Beach.   To those who know him best “he’s a hockey guy who’s generous to a fault.”
